Referred to as the “Rocky of brain injuries,” Every 21 Seconds is the comeback story you never knew existed. Struck down at the age of twenty-nine and given little to no hope of rediscovering the life he lost, Sweeney’s desire and persistence to re-capture his life will leave you absolutely inspired. “Having my story become a voice for the millions who have suffered this injury has always been a dream of mine,” said Sweeney. “It still amazes me to this day that the book I wrote was about my life. Yet traumatic brain injuries happen to thousands of people every day, and over a million people every year. When it happened to me, suddenly, unexpectedly, and immediately my life was forever changed.”
March has been designated Traumatic Brain Injury Awareness Month. President Obama proposed $7.2 billion in the 2012 fiscal budget to research and treat the invisible wounds of war: TBI and post-traumatic stress disorder. In 2010, news agencies reported military figures estimating 115,000 soldiers have suffered mild traumatic brain injuries in Iraq and Afghanistan, many of whom receive little or no treatment for lingering health problems.
